Serving Catholic Boards through Training and Formation

With a focus on clarifying the distinct roles of governance and management, Leadership Roundtable is empowering Catholic nonprofit organizations through board training and formation. As part of Leadership Roundtable’s Catholic Standards for Excellence program, we offer board training and formation that addresses the confusion that can exist with regard to the board’s role to govern and the staff’s role to manage.

To support a board of directors, training includes modules in fiduciary responsibility, by-laws, committees, effective board meetings, board evaluation, board member orientation and training, fundraising and resource development, and board member handbook. Leadership Roundtable offers the program in-person as part of a board retreat, or online in a series of formation workshops, or as a combination of both. We also offer it bilingually, in English and Spanish.

Catholic Volunteer Network recently engaged Leadership Roundtable to provide board formation through a series of in-person and online workshops. Catholic Volunteer Network fosters and promotes full-time domestic and international faith-based volunteer service opportunities for people of all ages, backgrounds, and skills.

Tom King, chair of Catholic Volunteer Network’s board, shared that, like many organizations after the pandemic, their board felt it needed to restructure and examine its practices and policies.

“We have made tremendous progress, including updating our personnel policies, by-laws, and board manual,” he shared, expressing gratitude for the work with Leadership Roundtable. “Our work with Leadership Roundtable helped us redefine board committee expectations, implement a board evaluation, and discern the next steps for the organization.”

King noted that the board’s time in the formation program was spent focusing on their organization’s mission and desired outcomes through strategic, thoughtful, and caring discussions that were rooted in prayer. Those discussions, he said, gave the board the energy and passion to accomplish their goals.
